I am mom to 2 active boys and an Assistant Research Professor in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University. As breastfeeding researcher, I am constantly scanning the literature for articles that guide my research and inform my clinical practice. It is my hope that you will find the articles I highlight as interesting and informative as I do, and that you will use them to guide you in the important work of lactation professionals and breastfeeding advocates.

After my breastfeeding experience, I feel led to help motivate, educate, and assist families in making the decision to breastfeed and providing the support to stick with it. I sought out the information and support and didn’t let anything get in my way (even though I had MANY obstacles). I want to somehow turn this passion into a career, but I don’t quite know where to start – my degree is in communication, I work in a completely unrelated field, and I have no healthcare training or experience. Do you have any advice?
That’s wonderful! My suggestion is to look into being a laceration educator or an international board certified lactation consultant. Depending on where you are, there may be a program near you. Check out the website for ILCA–the international lactation consultants association at http://www.ILCA.org. They have a section on becoming a lactation consultant and listings of course providers. Although it helps, you don’t need any healcare experience ( I didn’t have any when I started). What you need most is a passion for helping moms and babies! Best of Luck! Maybe we will meet at a conference soon!
